Grow Like A Pro With These Organic Gardening Tips

Grow Like A Pro With These Organic Gardening Tips

What do you know about organic gardening? Do you have some gardening techniques? If you do, do you wish to improve upon them? Is what you’re using working with your organic garden or against it? If you cannot answer these questions confidently, look at the tips below to help grow a better organic garden.

Pick the right plants. Certain plants will have an easier time germinating than others, and will guarantee a better harvest for the beginning organic gardener. Good choices include hardy varieties of cabbage, cauliflower, and herbs, but of course, you have to choose those plants which are going to do well in your climate.

Be sure to test your soil before you plant your garden, if you want to be successful without the need for chemicals. A home testing kit can tell you the pH of your soil, which indicates the likelihood of plant survival. A vegetable garden requires a pH of about 6.5; if your soil is off, you can supplement before your plants start to die.

When you buy seeds for your garden, be sure to purchase seeds that are labeled “certified organic.” This ensures that your plants will be organic throughout their lifespan and that the seeds you are buying aren’t contaminated with chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Watch out for labels, such as “genetically engineered” or any mention of “natural” that does not include the phrase “certified organic.”

To keep air flowing through your compost pile, stand a large PVC pipe with punched holes in the center of your pile so the air flows up and down the pipe, and then through the holes directly into the pile. The air movement helps your soil decomposers create the heat needed to jumpstart the decay process.

Make easy work of washing your organic produce with a laundry basket. As you pick your produce, lay them in a plastic laundry basket, which works as a strainer. Hold the hose over the top and the water can make quick work of rinsing all the dirt and other matter off of your fruits and veggies.

Fertilize your soil with organic compost. Organic gardeners tend to fertilize their soil twice in one season: once prior to planting, and then again in the middle of a growth cycle. The best fertilizer to use is an organic compost, as it releases nutrients slowly unlike chemical fertilizers, which release nutrients in one go and then lose their effect.

Encourage toads to take up residence in your organic garden. Toads are a natural predator of many of the pesky bugs that will eat and destroy your crops. Create makeshift toad houses out of overturned broken clay pots and keep soil nice and moist to make it conducive to amphibian life.

If you plan on starting an organic garden, you should always properly cover your seeds. If your seeds are not properly covered, then they will not grow. You should aim to cover most of your seeds about three times as deep as the thickness of your seeds in order to ensure optimum growth. However, certain seeds, such as alyssum and snapdragons, should not be covered because they need a lot of light to germinate.

Choose a site for fruit trees depending on their specific requirements. Most fruit trees require 8 hours of sun per day. Morning sun is important, as it dries dew rapidly, helping to prevent fungus. Avoid planting fruit trees in a low spot in the garden where frost or cold air can collect. Some fruit trees are especially susceptible to late frost damage, and are better planted on a north-facing slope. This is especially true for peach, plum, cherry and apricot trees.

To help spread mulch easily, you can use a flat-head rake or a bow. If you are using a rake, you should use the rakes tined edge to pull and spread your mulch. Use the flat side of the rake to even your mulch on the bed. You will want to use a light push then pull action.

For organic fertilizer to use around the plants in your garden and flower beds, start a compost bin made from all-organic material that would otherwise be wasted. Pitch in yard clippings, leaves, vegetable peelings, eggshells and coffee grounds, turning the contents of the bin often. In just a short time, you will have great material to mix with your soil that will provide nutrients and nourishment to your plants without added chemicals.

Fill your gardens with flowers. You shouldn’t spend too much time and energy planting annual types of flowers as they will only last one season. Keep these types in a limited area of your garden. For larger areas, go with perennials. That way you will have flowers again next year.

In your organic garden, try using floating row covers to prevent moths from laying eggs on your plants. Floating row covers, which are made from lightweight material that has been specially designed to allow light and water to penetrate it, can be used as an effective cover for your plants to stop moths from laying eggs. This helps to protect your plants from caterpillar damage later in the growing season.

The best way to spread mulch on your organic garden is with a flat-headed rake. A flat-headed rake is effectively two tools in one. You can use the tined side to distribute mulch over fresh areas. When you flip the rake over, its flat side makes an efficient tool for smoothing your mulch and making sure it is distributed evenly.

Grow organic herbs to add some flavor to your cooking and brighten up your yard. Herbs make great landscape plants: add them to a bed or pot in your yard. They are wonderful to flavor foods you cook, offer fragrance and have medicinal properties. Herbs are very easy to grow and actually thrive on neglect.

Are you more informed when it comes to organic gardening? Do you have a gardening technique or do you have a better gardening technique now? Can you now use things that work with your organic garden? Hopefully, the tips above should have given you advice on growing a better organic garden.

10 Minute At-Home Work Out Break

10 Minute At-Home Work Out Break

Hi! I’m Tara from Treble in the Kitchen and I am so happy to be guest blogging for Danielle today! Danielle and I connected a while back, and I have loved keeping up with her healthy approach to running your own business. She has so much good advice to offer! Treble in the Kitchen is my little corner of the web where I love sharing my latest kitchen experiments (mostly healthy, some not!), my latest workouts, and bits and pieces of my life.

While I am a Bodypump instructor and certified personal trainer, I recently started going to school full-time to fulfill my longtime dream of becoming a Registered Dietitian. The great thing about my schooling is that I am doing it through a DISTANCE learning program, which means I get to create my own schedule and I can work from home…much like an entrepreneur!

That being said, I completely understand that when you work from home you really are working all the time, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing but does make it difficult to squeeze activity and fitness into the day.

I’ve created a great arm workout that focuses on light weight and high repetition. I love to use this workout as a little screen-time break in the middle of my day, but you could tag this workout on to an outdoor run or walk or fit it in wherever YOU feel the need to move your body.

Arm Workout

Equipment Used:

  • 2 light dumbbells (around 5 lbs)
  • Mat, optional

Complete 20 repetitions of each exercise and repeat the circuit 2-3 times. Focus on keeping the body in alignment, bracing your midsection, and maintaining good form.

*If you are making any major changes to your fitness routine, please make sure to speak with a medical professional first!

  • Boat Pose with Drawbridge Arms: Sit with your upper back at a 45 degree angle. Bend your knees and place your feet flat on the ground. Feet should be hip distance apart, and you can lift them off the ground to engage the ab muscles getting into boat pose. Hold one dumbbell in each hand with your arms in a goal post position, both arms in 90 degree angles. While maintaining the angle in your arms, lower the weights to the ground so your forearms are parallel to the floor. Bring the arms back to starting position and repeat 20 times.
  • Plank with Single Arm Bicep Curl: Begin in plank position, while holding onto two dumbbells. Hands should be under your shoulders and feet slightly wider than your hips. Lift one arm, while keeping the hips square to the ground. Extend the arm out away from the body, then curl the dumbbell in towards your shoulder targeting your bicep. Return back to the extended position and repeat the exercise 20 times on this side before repeating on the other side. This can be completed on the knees if your hips are moving.
  • Plank Tricep Kickback: Begin in plank position, holding on to two dumbbells as described above. Keeping the elbow in close to the body, draw the elbow up so the weight is right by your ribcage. Extend the arm backwards, targeting the tricep muscle (the back of the arm). Bring the weight back to starting position and repeat the exercise 20 times on this side before repeating on the other side. This can be completed on the knees if your hips are moving.
  • Boat Pose with Pec Fly: Return to boat pose as described in the first exercise. Hold one dumbbell in each hand as you extend your arms out in front of your body. As you keep the belly button pulled into the spine and the ribs hugged close together, open and close the arms to target the chest muscles. Repeat 20 times.
  • W Arms: Place your feet flat on the ground and sit with your upper body at a 45 degree angle. Hold one dumbbell in each hand and extend your arms out from your shoulders at 45 degree angles. Draw your elbows down towards your waist line and create a W shape with your arms. As you make this motion, squeeze your shoulder blades together to target the upper back. Repeat 20 times.

Enjoy the workout!

The Hottest Soups for a Chilly Winter

The Hottest Soups for a Chilly Winter

The cooler weather is upon us and even though I live in the desert, it can get chilly here! We wait all summer long to bring out the sweaters, unpack the boots from the back of the closet and bring out the soft cozy blankets.  It doesn’t need to be bitter cold to be ready to enjoy a warm fire in the fireplace.

So what adds nicely to this beautiful picture?  Warm FOOD! Bring out the casseroles and cakes and crock-pots. Basically anything you can make that warms up the kitchen and your belly!  If you are anything like me, this is your favorite time of the year for a good soup!

There are plenty of places that serve a good bowl of soup, some with bread bowls and baguettes.  Typically they taste great and are a perfect quick bite to grab for a lunch or your boyfriend who’s sick (again).  But as I go from place to place and stare at the menus, it’s always the same soups. You’ve got your broccoli cheese, your chicken noddle soup, a good tomato, etc.

This year, I need something more!  Something beyond the basic soup recipes that we all eat day after day. So I have scoured the best recipes out there to give you some new soup recipes to try this winter. None of these recipes are difficult to make but they will definitely make you want to stay away from the broccoli cheese for awhile (If that’s possible!).

At one magical point in time, I began a love affair with fish tacos. I fell under their spell and haven’t been able to tear myself away ever since. If they’re an option on a menu, you bet your booty I’m ordering them. If the local seafood market has a sale? Fish tacos for everyone!!! I play favorites with my food and regret nothing.

Then one day I let my husband do the grocery shopping.

Frozen shrimp were on sale. Buy one get one free, to be exact. And just like that, my deep freezer was filled with no less than six jumbo bags of shrimp.

But wait, there’s more. This darling pilot of mine did one more quick grocery run for me two weeks later and shrimp were on sale… AGAIN!

Naturally he forgot about all past transgressions and bought. more. shrimp.

I’m now terrified of my freezer.

From this point onwards, all tacos will be shrimp tacos.

These Spicy Sriracha Shrimp Tacos are fast, flavorful, and topped with a zesty Cilantro Lime Slaw that will rock yours socks!

Ingredients

  • 8-12 soft corn tortillas (see notes)
  • 1 pound shrimp (fresh or frozen/thawed)
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • 1 TBSP avocado oil*
  • 1/4 cup homemade or store-bought ranch dressing**
  • 1 TBSP Sriracha Chili Sauce
  • 1 heaping cup finely shredded/chopped cabbage***
  • 1 jalapeño pepper
  • 1-2 TBSP apple cider vinegar
  • 1 TBSP honey
  • 1 lime
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • fresh chopped cilantro, to taste

*No avocado oil? No problem! Use olive oil, coconut oil, or your favorite healthy oil.

**If making these dairy-free, grab a paleo-friendly or dairy-free ranch or feel free to make your own at home! YUM!

***I used a combination of green and purple cabbage but feel free to use what you have on hand!

Instructions

  1. Clean and peel shrimp, defrosting if needed. Lately we’ve been buying frozen, deveined, easy-peel shrimp. All I have to do is defrost, peel, and cook! You can also buy your shrimp already peeled if you’d like!
  2. Set prepped shrimp in the fridge, covered while you make your slaw and sauce.
  3. For the Sriracha Ranch, simply whisk together both ingredients. For a spicier sauce, add extra Sriracha to taste.
  4. For the Cilantro Lime Slaw, remove the stem/seeds/ribs from the jalapeño, cut into strips and mince. Combine with cabbage, apple cider vinegar, honey, salt, and pepper. Cut your lime in half and add juice of half the lime into your slaw. Toss together and add as much cilantro as your heart desires! Slice the remaining half into wedges for your tacos. Adjust honey to taste and set aside to marinate while you cook the shrimp.
  5. Pat shrimp dry and season with paprika, cayenne, garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix well to coat both sides.
  6. Heat a large pan or skillet to medium-high heat with 1 TBSP of oil and sauté your shrimp. Cook on each side for about 2 minutes until shrimp curl and become opaque. The cook time will depend on the heat setting you choose and the size of your shrimp, but regardless they’ll be perfectly cooked in a matter of minutes.
  7. Place your shrimp on a clean cutting board and chop into smaller pieces, much like you were coarsely chopping an onion. This extra step helps prevent the shrimp from dive-bombing out of your taco and onto your plate/lap/floor and makes them way easier to eat!
  8. Line your corn tortillas with shrimp and top with a hearty drizzle of sauce. Double up on corn tortillas if desired to prevent breakage (see notes) – I like to gently warm my corn tortillas up in the microwave or on a skillet before stuffing them. So good!
  9. Top with slaw, serve with lime wedges, and dig in!

Notes

TORTILLA TIP: The amount of tortillas you use will depend on two factors: how many you’re serving and how full you’re stuffing each tacos. If you’re making 6 smaller tacos you may be able to get away with just 6 single tortillas. Stuffing the filling into 4 or 5 tacos? Double up on the tortillas to prevent tearing. I learned this trick from our local tex-mex restaurants and have been doubling up on my tortillas ever since! You can even double up if you’re making 6 tacos – whatever works!

As for the cilantro, use as much or as little as you’d like!

Not a fan of cilantro? No problem! Skip the cilantro entirely and jazz up the flavor of your slaw using thinly sliced red onion instead.

9 Reasons To Keep Coconut Oil In Your Bathroom

9 Reasons To Keep Coconut Oil In Your Bathroom

There are countless everyday uses for coconut oil. I use coconut oil in my cooking and in my homemade body care products. Here are 9 of my favorite uses for coconut oil in my bathroom (#1 is my favorite)!

I write a lot about using coconut oil in recipes but many don’t know of the benefits of using coconut oil outside of the kitchen.  We keep a jar of coconut oil in our bathroom always! Coconut oil is a wonderful skin moisturizer  as well as a leave in hair treatment. Below is a list of 9 ways our family uses coconut oil in the bathroom.

1. OIL PULLING

Have you swished with coconut oil? Oil pulling is a traditional way to cleanse the mouth of bacteria. Start your day with oil pulling by swishing a teaspoon of coconut oil in your mouth. Try to swish for at least 10 minutes. If you can, swish up to 20 minutes.

2. CARRIER OIL

When I’m stressed or need to relax I mix a spoonful of coconut with a few drops of my favorite essential oils.

3. SHAVE YOUR LEGS

That’s right! Coconut oil is a girls best friend when it comes to shaving. If you want baby soft legs, rub a small amount of coconut oil on your legs before shaving.

4. COCONUT OIL HAIR TREATMENT

Have you tried coconut oil for hair? It’s amazing! Coconut oil helps reduce protein loss when used as a pre or post treatment. I swing towards pre-treating my hair by adding a 1/2 tablespoon of coconut oil to the roots  and work the oil down to the ends. I then leave the coconut oil on for an hour before rinsing.

5. SKIN MOISTURIZER

I use whipped coconut oil body butter almost daily! Coconut oil is known to help reduce scaring, stretch marks and prevent sagging skin. It’s a natural “miracle” cream! Try my whipped coconut oil body butter here.

 6. RASH AND BURN CREAM

Coconut oil helps to sooth rashes and burns. I’ve witnessed this when my children have had diaper rashes. A small dab of coconut oil has always helped to reduce and even eliminate diaper rash.

7. EYE MAKEUP REMOVER

Another wonderful reason to have coconut oil on hand in the bathroom is for removing makeup! Wash your face and then use coconut oil to remove the remaining eye makeup.

8. CUTICLE TREATMENT

Coconut oil does wonders for your nails! Massage your finger nails and toe nails with it as often as you like to help keep rugged cuticles tame. The anti-fungal properties of coconut oil are also helpful for keeping  toes clear of fungal infections.

9. FRIZZ TAMER

Coconut oil is my go-to when I need to tame my daughters beautifully wild hair. Only use a small amount though. Too much coconut oil will leave your hair with an oily look.
