Vagina discharge in pregnancy is leukorrhea. Leukorrhea also known as leucorrhea is the medical term for a thin milky white odorless vaginal discharge that many women see in early pregnancy and through out their pregnancy.
It increases as you progress further in pregnancy. And this is due to the increasing level of estrogen hormone.
The two main reasons for a discharge during pregnancy are:
Vaginal secretion during pregnancy can start as early as 6-12 days after the egg has been fertilised by the sperm. Some women experience light spotting or bleeding around the same time. This is known as implantation spotting.
Implantation bleeding is usually light pink or bright red in colour. It is also mostly accompanied by a implantation cramps and lower abdominal pain.
Some women may mistake this white, milky discharge for pre menstrual syndrome thinking their period is about to start.
A normal pregnancy discharge is usually thin, white, milky or creamy. It is odorless or may have a mild smell and it is not itchy. It is produced by the glands at the neck of the womb (cervix)and the walls of your vagina.
If you have a discharge that smells like fish or its itchy, see the doctor as soon as possible. This may be an infection like thrush, bacterial vaginosis, trichomoniasis, chlamydia or gonorrhea.
If you had unprotected sex around ovulation and you see a thin milky or creamy discharge around the time of your missed period then you may be pregnant.
White discharge is one of the early signs and symptoms of pregnancy
But also keep in mind that thick creamy discharge is also one of the signs that your period is coming.
Here are some pictures of what early pregnancy mucus looks like:
After conception, the cervix becomes swollen with blood and becomes soft. Thereby producing more cervical mucus. The CM produced after fertilsation varies from woman to woman. Some women experience a creamy white discharge while some experience a milky-whitish discharge.
As your pregnancy progresses your discharge may become watery or thicker depending on what trimester you are in.
A missed period is the most obvious and accurate form of confirming a pregnancy. Take a pregnancy test around a week after you have missed your period. This is because taking a pregnancy test too early may result in a negative or false result.
If you are anxious and you can’t wait to know if what you feel is pregnancy or not, here are some early signs and symptoms of pregnancy:
Implantation bleeding or spotting is experience by some women but not all. This usually occurs around 6-7 days past ovulation. It’s ok if you don’t experience any spots after ovulation. You may still be pregnant.
Cramping often happens when the fertilised egg is trying to attach itself to the walls of the uterus. It is also usually accompanied by bleeding. Again don’t worry if you don’t have any cramping days past ovulation. Not all women experience this.
Morning sickness and feeling Nauseated are common in early pregnancy. Some women start to feel nauseated as early as a few days after implantation has taken place.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy is one of the reasons for morning sickness and feeling nauseous.
For most women morning sickness is severe during the first trimester and decreases or not present at all in second and third trimester.
One of the symptoms of early pregnancy is a milky white discharge around the time your period is expected. This can be easily mistaken for the regular discharge you get before your period begins.
Your breast may feel sore or tender due to the various changes going on in your body. Your breast may feel fuller and look more attractive due to the rising level of the estrogen hormone.
Hormonal changes are likely to cause you to feel tired in pregnancy. This is normal and expected. Increasing level of the progesterone hormone makes you feel tired and sleepy.
But if you feel too tired and weak, you may be deficient in iron. See your doctor, who would perform a blood test to check if you need a iron supplement.
Egg white discharge is the wet and slippery discharge that is present at ovulation. The main function of this discharge is to provide a sperm friendly environment for the sperm. And also to allow the sperm move easily when travelling to fertilise the egg.
After ovulation, your discharge becomes stick and tacky or for some women milky and creamy. The discharge after ovulation signifies you are in you non-fertile phase.
